For years I had a gnawing feeling down deep in my heart that all the meat and dairy that I was eating was doing me harm. I didn’t have a overly compassionate concern for the animals, nor was I convicted that it was against my religion. But as I continued to age physically and to analyze my concerns, there was a realization that we humans were not created to be meat eaters, at least on a meal to meal basis.
When my wife, Marilyn, began to experience “female” problems we began to look for answers in the doctor’s office. Not once did the doctors question us about our diet. Instead they offered the only legal option for them, and that was medication or surgery. The medication only addressed the symptoms and not very effectively. So we opted for surgery, which was endoscopic removal of her female organs. After terrible pain of surgery and months of suffering with symptoms such as lack of energy, tingling all over, sleeplessness, muscular pain all over, and a general feeling of flu-like symptoms, we were at the end of our patience. Nine medical doctors had used everything they knew to try to relieve Marilyn’s symptoms to no avail. Marilyn even began planning her funeral.
Then a friend of ours suggested a new diet that was said to help just about any problem. What had we to lose? We tried this new diet for three months without any obvious help. Then one morning, after three months and three weeks on this diet, Marilyn came to the breakfast table and said “I don’t have any symptoms any more”. That was over ten years ago and the symptoms of fibromyalgia have never returned.
What was this diet? It is the plant-based diet of Genesis 1:29, which says “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” So, we fasted from all animal and dairy products and started juicing carrots and spinach and beets and a few other vegetables. And we started taking a dehydrated barley grass juice along with either distilled water or fresh carrot juice. And we started losing weight and getting healthier.
But what about the Christians who think it is a sin to fast from meat? After all, didn’t Jesus eat meat? After all, didn’t Peter and Paul say we ought to eat meat and not call it a sin?
